Warships for Export - Armstrong Warships 1867 - 1927, by Peter Brook.

The latest of the WSS warship monographs deals not with a single class or type of ship but with the products of a single shipbuilder, Armstrongs. In the Pre-Dreadnought and Dreadnought eras Armstrongs were warship builders to the world supplying most smaller navies and some major ones with battleships and cruisers. The Elswick Cruiser was the most innovative of the designs, but the firm also designed and built battleships and armoured cruisers, submarines and a few destroyers and torpedo craft. In many cases Armstrongs designers were untrammelled by demands from navy staffs, and showed what the naval architect could produce when allowed his head. 243 pages, fully illustrated with 160 photographs (some never published before) of every ship plus 93 line drawings including drawings of some of the unbuilt designs. There is also a table of Armstrong guns and a full bibliography and index.

Comben Longstaff & Co.Ltd.

Comben Longstaff & Co.Ltd. was one of the most prominent shipowners in the UK and European trades, owning a wide variety of coasters and larger ships mostly with names ending - BROOK. From Cordillera Books, Canada :

A Great Fleet of Ships/The Canadian Forts and Parks by S.C.Heal, Canada,

The author has given the subject the fullest attention yet given to Canada's wartime standard ships. While the extent of Canada's war production effort, 1939 - 1945 is fairly well known to Canadians, one aspect of it has largely, and inexplicably escaped notice. This is the construction in Canadian yards, from a standing start in 1941 of 402 merchant ships, including a number expressly developed for naval service. They were launched from seven yards on the West Coast, and eleven on the East Coast, St.Lawrence and Great Lakes. They came from three basic designs which had several variants. On a comparative scale, it was a feat rivalling that of the United States. Individual events such as the loss of the Fort Stirkine and a number of others are examined and analysed. Some of these are accompanied by spectacular photos. There is interesting anecdotal material including tows and runs up a South American river. Also an account of the workings of the fleet train as a part of Task Force 57 and the S E Asia Fleet. The complete fleet list includes an explanation/description of all the historical and geographic names that were drawn upon in choosing the names of the Forts and Parks. The 'Ocean' ships are dealt with also and there is a 30 x 40 inches general arrangement plan of the North Sands ship which lead to all the Oceans, Forts and Parks and was adapted for the famous American 'Liberty' ship. 321 pages, 165 photographs, line drawings and 30 x 40 inches plan,

Hardback: £24.50 - due November.

Smoke Ash and Steam - West Coast Steam Engines by Robin E Sheret.

A fully illustrated historical account of the marine steam engine as developed on the West Coast of America by an acknowledged expert. What made steam engines work ? This was the question often put to the author and this book developed after some years of research. Many of the diagrams were previously used to explain the basics of steam to people without an engineering background. The types of engine used on the West Coast and elsewhere changed as technology improved and needs changed. The book covers Sidewheel engines, sternwheel engines, walking beam engines, engines for propeller driven ships. Boilers and steam driven deck machinery are also covered. This is truly a book for the marine engineer, steam buff, maritime historian and model maker. Also for those who can simply remember the smell of steam. Superbly illustrated with photos, plans and exploded views.

Softback £14.00 and due November.
